Jean begins work as an assistant to a photographer obsessed with the archaic art of daguerreotypes and tortured by the death of his wife, whose presence can still be felt in the shadows. The first film that Kiyoshi Kurosawa has ever made outside Japan combines romanticism and intrigue, naturally prolonging the filmmaker’s conception of the phantasmagorical.
He started off shooting in Super-8 at Rikkyo University. Among others, he’s directed fantastic genre masterpieces like Cure (97) or Pulse (01), a marvel of suspense like Charisma (99) and the family drama Tokyo Sonata (08). He received the Time Machine Award here in 2006.
