The 49th Sitges Film Festival, taking place October 7 to 16, uses the legendary series as its leit motiv

The universe of the legendary Star Trek saga will be the leit motiv at the upcoming Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, taking place October 7 to 16. Star Trek turns 50 and Sitges –at the doors of its 50th edition, arriving next year– opens wide to the trekkie universe by dedicating its poster to it and programming different screenings and activities.

The Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966, is made up of five TV series, an animated 2D series and twelve films, in addition to a dozen videogames, different role games, hundreds of novels and short stories. It is a true cult phenomenon with an infinite legion of fans, who will have a chance to discover the genesis and manifestations of the trekkie galaxy in Sitges.

As its point of reference, the Sitges 2016 poster is using Star Trek precisely. Once again this year, it’s been created by the China agency, with Rafa Antón as it executive creative director, and Antonio G. Cárceles as art director. The Sitges 2016 show a graphic icon of Star Trek and is accompanied by a second typographical piece that links the Festival with the beyond.

The team at China sums up its creation like this: “There is nothing that makes you feel like traveling more than a huge map. And this year’s image is nothing more than an attempt to reflect the hugest map in the world: the map of the universe. We wanted to subtly capture the infinity of space and the urge to explore it, to go where no man has gone before. And at the same time, locating the Festival on this map. A little big festival in a small city in a small peninsula on a small planet. A clear direction that helps all Star Trek fans in the universe to find each other this October, and the share that passion for cinema and unexplored worlds”.

Soviet retrospective

The 49th Sitges Film Festival is revving its engines and is starting to define its lineup’s initial structure, which we’ll be giving a preview of in early July. In addition to the trekkie universe, Sitges 2016 will be presenting a Soviet retrospective, including a selection of fantastic genre films from 1957 to 1978 produced in presently inexistent states, like the USSR, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Czechoslovakia. The selection will also include Polish films from the same period. Under the title Red Planet Marx: the la (Soviet) conquest of space, the retrospective will develop the concept of the space opera, with space travel and the conquest of the universe as featured elements. In addition, we will be programming a North American period production, made from footage from some of the movies from the film series and created for the intention of communicating an ideologically acceptable version of the Soviet version. Each screening will be presented by a specialist in the field and will have a post-screening.

And once again Blood Window, the Festival showcase dedicated to emerging Latin American fantasy, will have a cross-sectional character, bringing together the productions from this continent selected in the Festival’s different sections. Blood Window and Sitges worked in close collaboration at the recent 2016 Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film.

Short films will occupy an important place in the Sitges 2016 lineup and, in order for them to receive greater visibility, they will be shown at several different screenings at the Auditori. This new feature reinforces the fact that, since 2014, the Festival is qualified to be able to present the winning shorts from its official categories to be nominated for the Hollywood Academy’s Oscar.

SGAE Nova Autoria

For the seventh year in a row, the SGAE Nova Autoria program will bring together short films by students from Catalan film schools as a part of the Festival. The selected fiction, animation and documentary shorts will compete for the SGAE Nova Autoria Awards for best screenplay, best direction and best original music. Through these prizes, the SGAE and the SGAE Foundation offer emerging creators the possibility of exhibiting their works and making them known to the general public in the setting of an audiovisual event with international scope.

Carnet Jove Jury

The Catalonian Generalitat’s Catalan Youth Agency (Agència Catalana de la Joventut), and the Festival have opened the call to participate in the twelfth Carnet Jove Jury, with the deadline for entries on July 4th. The goal of the Carnet Jove Jury is to professionalize film reviewing and offer an offer an opportunity to five young people interested in this field, or in the film world in general, so they can be a part of an official jury at one of the most prestigious film festivals and the number one in the world in the fantastic genre. The Carnet Jove Jury is incorporated in the Festival’s jury structures and presents two awards: the Carnet Jove Jury Award for the Best Feature Length Film from the Official Fantàstic In-Competition Selection and the Carnet Jove Jury Award for the Best Feature Length Film from the Midnight X-Treme section, a Festival category that contains horror genre movies with a more independent spirit.
