The Sitges Film Festival receives the Creu de Sant Jordi Award

In addition to the film competition, the Government also acknowledged the Retiro and the Prado recreational societies with this prestigious honor

On its 50th anniversary, the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia has been honored by the Generalitat, Catalonia’s autonomous government, with the Creu de Sant Jordi (St. George’s Cross), one of the highest acknowledgements a person or an entity can receive from the Catalan Government.

“For its remarkable role, in its capacity as the number one fantastic film festival in the world. It is also the film festival with the most international prestige and media repercussions of all the festivals in Catalonia and one of the most important in Spain”. These are the words with which the Generalitat made a case for awarding the Creu de Sant Jordi to the Sitges Film Festival, announced today at a press conference by the Minister for the Presidency, Neus Munté.

Àngel Sala, director of the Festival, showed his enthusiasm for the award and pointed out that “it is a great recognition of the work done by a team for half a century, from the group of pioneers who launched the Festival at a very difficult time, to all of the different team who have later adapted it to the needs of the times”. Sala also added that “this acknowledgement of cinema and, especially, the culture of fantastic film, goes to show that Catalonia is a powerhouse in popular culture and that Sitges is, without a doubt, the international benchmark film event when referring to a genre that’s a leader in media impact and an undeniable creator of trends”. Finally, Sala wanted to note that “it is an acknowledgement on different levels: of the institutions that have made it possible, of all the private collaborators, of a town like Sitges –the Festival’s incomparable setting- and of a faithful, unfailing audience”. The Mayor of Sitges, Miquel Forns, also expressed his satisfaction for the legendary insignia, “that represents one of the most important institutional acknowledgements for a domestic festival, born in Sitges and with an international profile”. Forns added that the creus de Sant Jordi awarded to Sitges in 2017 “reinforce our status as a cultural capital committed to talent, associationism and dynamization of the arts”.

The Retiro Recreational Society and the Casino Prado Suburense, which throughout the Festival function as emblematic movie theaters, have also received the Generalitat’s acknowledgement this year as entities with many years of experience promoting culture and leisure activities in the town of Sitges.
