More than 300 professionals attend the event to commemorate its fiftieth anniversary at the French festival

The Sitges Film Festival started to rev its engines in the nerve center of worldwide cinematic activity: Cannes. Accompanied by the film industry and institutions, Sitges was featured at two separate events to present its 50th anniversary, to be held from October 5th to 15th, where it grabbed the spotlight as the number one international fantastic film festival.

At a mass event, the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia celebrated its half century mark at Cannes. “Cinema isn’t just movies on a screen, it’s also being around producers, distributors and exhibitors to detect talent and be able to create more fantastic films. This is just one of the Festival’s main goals”, its director, Àngel Sala, pointed out. Attending the celebratory event, held at the Catalan Films & TV stand, were Àngels Torras, representative from the Department of Culture’s Territorial Services; Francisco Vargas, director of the Audiovisual Department at the ICEC (Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies); Congresswoman Elena Faba; Miguel Ángel Bastenier, member of the Sitges Foundation board of trustees, and a broad cross-section of people from the international audiovisual industry.

Sala expressed his gratitude to the Festival’s previous directors and staffs, as well as to the public institutions that support it and that have contributed to its worldwide success. “Catalonia is a powerhouse of popular culture and year after year, we show that the fantastic genre is a very important representation of Catalan culture around the world”, he added. The director also emphasized the role of the film media outlets, which “always go to great lengths at the Festival and create trends”.

Finally, Àngel Sala gave a great deal of credit to Sitges’ audience, who “are the ones who make the Festival great, because genre movies are capable of creating true fans, people who share a deep love of cinema”.

Sitges also played a prominent role at the Fantastic Mixer, a meeting dedicated to genre festivals held this past Sunday at Cannes, along with representatives from BIFAN (Korea), Fantasia (Quebec), the Frontières international laboratory and the Latin American film platform Blood Window, among others. Àngel Sala praised the work done by all of these festivals, which help to make genre films visible around the world, and he invited them to celebrate Sitges’ 50th anniversary all together.

The Festival is grateful for the support received in organizing these events from the sponsoring brands Torres, Mercedes Autolica, Font d’Or and Embotits Bundó, all attending Cannes.
