The Festival celebrates its 50 years with a new image and a lineup of special activities that includes exhibitions, a film series and other initiatives

Half a century committed to the best genre cinema. The 50th anniversary of the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is already underway. The film competition is the main focus of the cultural calendar with a special lineup that will reach its highest point with Festival number 50, from October 5th to 15th. A year when Dracula will be its leitmotiv, virtual reality will have an important significance with Samsung Sitges Cocoon and when it can already announce the attendance of two exemplary directors in the history genre films: William Friedkin and Johnnie To, among many other leading figures who will disclosed over the upcoming months.

The Sitges Film Festival is celebrating its 50 year history. With a new image, but preserving the classic gorilla as its emblem and the essence that makes it unique in the world, the film competition would like to share the celebration of its 50th anniversary with its faithful following and all those spectators interested in fantastic genre and cinema in the broadest sense. The new logo is an adaptation of the historic Sitges brand and a reaffirmation of its commitment to genre.

The poster for its 50th year refers to the Festival’s leitmotiv Dracula the fantastic genre’s myth par excellence, making the most of the 25th anniversary of the definitive film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The poster, created once again this year by the China agency, rediscovers the mysterious and otherworldly essence of the vampire, dissociating it from both recent banalizations and overexploited clichés. One of the aspects that the poster explores is the vampire’s post mortem rigidity, its ambiguity, its nature as an apparition in a gothic, expressionist context but, at the same time, hypermodern and culturally timeless.

In the words of Rafa Antón, member of the creative team at China: “We wanted to pay tribute to Stoker’s work through an exercise that goes way beyond clichés, banking on the sole presence of a mysterious and evocative figure emerging from the fog. A fog that already appears in the source text and that is used as a visual metaphor of this ‘ocean of time’ Dracula crosses to reach his destination and his loved one”. The photograph, taken by Biel Capllonch, is inspired by the abstract atmosphere that’s characteristic of painters from the 19th century like Friedrich or Turner, whose work served as an aesthetic preface to the novel itself”. Completing the creative team that made the poster are Miguel Ángel Duo and Nico Ordozgoiti.

As an innovation this year, the Sitges 2017 poster features a new type of creativity in augmented reality format, done by the Wöwster Company.

In its 50th year, the film competition will be presenting a creative audiovisual piece and an official book to commemorate its anniversary and will be paying tribute to its founders and eminent figures related to the Festival’s beginnings. The lineup of events put together on the occasion of the celebration of its 50 years is designed to be a reaffirmation of genre cinema’s status as a universal language and, at the same time, the outreach of the Sitges brand as a hallmark of all fields that make up fantastic film. The Festival’s fiftieth anniversary is one of Generalitat Catalonian autonomous government’s official events on the list of anniversaries in 2017. To this effect, on May 2nd, the Festival received the Creu de Sant Jordi (Saint Gorge’s Cross) presented by the Generalitat in recognition of its 50 years.

The Sitges and 50 brands have already begun to be seen at some of the most important international movie venues. This past month of February, the Festival was featured at a reception in Los Angeles, along with the CAA, the prestigious artist talent agency.

In addition to Los Angeles, the Festival’s 50th anniversary was also featured at Cannes 2017. As a part of the most important film competition in the world, Sitges was co-host of the Fantastic Mixer –a meeting targeting directors and fantastic film festival programmers, as well as genre producers and distributors– and, at the same time, it threw a commemorative cocktail party attended by 300 sector professionals.

50th anniversary exhibitions

The Festival is bringing its history closer to the general public with the exhibition 50th Anniversary of the Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia 1968-2017: Cinema is Fantastic, first at the Catalonian Film Library and afterwards at the Miramar Building in Sitges. The show is curated by Diego López, Festival programmer and in charge of the Brigadoon section, and is organized along with the Film Library. It will present a journey through the 50 years of the Festival via its posters, outstanding films, guests and different images. It can be visited in Barcelona from June 22nd to September 17th, and it will be in Sitges during the month of October.

The Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona (Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona) –an institution the Festival recently signed an agreement of collaboration with– will be the stage for an exhibition that can be seen from September 5th to the  24th and that will be entitled 50th Anniversary of the Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia 1968-2017: Fantastic Memoir which will be composed of documents from the Sitges Historical Archive, copies of the Festival Newspaper from 1979 to present day, catalogues from each year, books and original poster paintings.

For both exhibitions, the Festival is grateful for the collaboration of Jordi Rosell i Milà, David Rosell, the Sitges Historical Archive and Maria Pilar Ráfales.

Film series

The Catalonian Film Library will also be offering a commemorative series of screenings including a selection of approximately fifty outstanding films from the Festival’s history, jointly programmed by the Film Library and the Festival. The Evil Dead, The Exorcist, The Thing, Akira, Reservoir Dogs, Oldboy, REC, The Day of the Beast, Mulholland Drive or Martyrs are just a few of the movies fans will be able to enjoy on the big screen from June 22nd to September 30th.

Samsung Sitges Cocoon

Virtual reality will be one of the Festival’s main focuses at its 50th anniversary. Following last year’s first and highly successful experience, Samsung puts its money on Sitges to bring the latest technologies in the field of virtual reality and immersive content and 360º.

Samsung Sitges Cocoon is the fruit of a new agreement of collaboration between the technological multinational and the Festival. This agreement provides Sitges with the privilege of being the stage for some of the most innovative productions in this sector. As a result, virtual reality will be triplicating its presence at the Festival with the debut of an official in-competition section, something unprecedented on the European film festival scene.

28 September 1968

The first Sitges Film Festival, then called the International Fantastic and Horror Movie Week, took place at the Prado movie theater from 28 September to 4 October 1968. The opening film was Aelita (Yakov Protazanov, 1924), a Soviet science fiction classic that explained how the Communist revolution could be exported to planet Mars. To commemorate this anniversary, the Prado will host the screening of the film this September 28th.

Commemorative ONCE lottery ticket

On the occasion of the Festival’s 50th anniversary, the ONCE (National Organization for the Blind in Spain) has designed a commemorative lottery ticket for the lottery to be held on Sunday, October 15th, coinciding with Sitges 2017’s closing ceremony.

Master’s Degree in fantastic film

Next term, the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) will be debuting the master’s degree Fantastic film and Contemporary Fiction, born from its collaboration with the Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia. The goal of these new studies is to train highly qualified professionals, with specific knowledge of the most transcendental branch in the present audiovisual market and culture.

The master’s degree is directed by professor Jordi Sánchez-Navarro, who was deputy director of the Sitges Film Festival (2001-2004) and since 2005, he collaborates as a programmer in the Anima't section. The academic team also includes Àngel Sala, director of the Sitges Film Festival, and Mike Hostench, deputy director, among other names connected to the film competition.

Literature and gastronomy

Sitges is also extending its brand to other cultural industries. The Federació de Gremis d'Editors d'Espanya (FGEE - Spanish Association of Publishers Guilds) and the Festival have signed an agreement of collaboration for authors and representatives from the audiovisual sector to study the possible adaptation of literary works for fantastic genre films. The initiative has been baptized as Taboo’ks and the call to present works has already begun.

During this year’s Festival, Sitges 2017 will be holding a unique event revolving around gastronomy, related to the Dracula leitmotiv. It will be entitled Sitges Bacanal and more information will be available other the next few months.

Support for the 50th Sitges Film Festival

Once again this year, the Festival is grateful for the commitment of all the collaborating institutions and companies: Gas Natural Fenosa  and Moritz (main sponsors), Torres and Samsung (sponsors), Meliá Sitges (sponsor and official headquarters), Movistar+ (multimedia partner), Deluxe (collaborator), La Vanguardia (official newspaper), TV3 (official TV) and Autolica - Mercedes Benz (official vehicle).

Sitges 2017 is organized thanks to the participation of the Sitges Town Hall and the Catalonian Generalitat’s Department of Culture’s Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals (Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises) and is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports’ Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts), the Barcelona Diputació (City Council) and the Carnet Jove - Departament de Benestar i Família (Department of Welfare and Family).
