The patron of the 50th anniversary will kick off the film competition with a fantasy tale set in the Cold War

The 50th Sitges Film Festival’s curtain will be rising with The Shape of Water, the latest and eagerly-awaited film scripted and directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who will also be the patron of the fiftieth anniversary. The film competition opens October 5th next with a lineup that will bringing together the latest trends in fantastic genre films and celebrating 50 years of passion for genre.

In a disquieting, high-security laboratory, during the Cold War, an extraordinary connection occurs between two apparently far away worlds. Lonely Elisa’s life, a worker at the laboratory, changes completely when she discovers an experiment classified as secret. Guillermo del Toro’s film stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer, and features a soundtrack created by Alexandre Desplat.

A fantastic creature lover and a good friend of Sitges, Del Toro already opened the Festival in 2006 with Pan’s Labyrinth, but his first visit to the film competition was actually in 1993, when he picked up the best screenplay award for Cronos, his debut movie.
