Oliver Stone to receive the Grand Honorary Award at Sitges 2015

The Festival will be presenting the Time Machine Award to distinguished figures like Sion Sono, Terry Jones, Nicolas Winding Refn, Andrzej Zulawski or Rick Baker

Famous director Oliver Stone will be receiving the Grand Honorary Award at Sitges 2015 and completing the list of acknowledgements the Festival will be presenting in its 48th year. Terry Jones, Nicolas Winding Refn, Andrzej Zulawski, Sion Sono and Rick Baker will receive the Time Machine Award in recognition of their respective lifetime achievement. And, in addition, the Festival will be paying tribute to actor Simon Yam and actress Rossana Yanni, with the Honorary Maria and Nosferatu Awards, respectively.

This morning, from the Berlanga Room of the SGAE Foundation in Madrid, the director of the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, Àngel Sala, announced that the famous American director, producer and screenwriter Oliver Stone will be receiving the Festival’s Grand Honorary Award this year. Stone, who has three Academy Awards and five Golden Globes, and is the director of essential films like Platoon, Wall Street, JFK or Born on the Fourth of July, has been a multifaceted and challenging creator since his beginnings, both in his facet as a screenwriter and as a filmmaker. His critical spirit and his versatility with cinematic language have led him to make incredibly diverse movies like Natural Born Killers, Nixon or World Trade Center.

The 48th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia will also be paying homage to true icons from the international film scene. So Sitges 2015 will also be presenting the Time Machine Award for the lifetime achievement of four renowned filmmakers: Nicolas Winding Refn, Andrzej Zulawski, Terry Jones and Sion Sono. The innovative Danish director, producer and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn, creator of films like Valhalla Rising (seen at the 2009 Festival), Drive (screened at Sitges 2011) and Only God Forgives (Sitges 2013), has managed to create his own unique style, based on violent, disturbing stories wrapped in a hypnotic mise en scène and soundtracks that become additional players in the storyline. Polish filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski is the author of renowned films like The Most Important Thing: Love and The Public Woman and is also the man responsible for the extraordinary psychological horror film Possession. On the other hand, this year the prolific Japanese filmmaker and poet Sion Sono will be presenting his previously announced Tag, Love & Peace and The Virgin Psychics at the Festival. This charismatic filmmaker’s career includes strokes of genius like the cult film Suicide Club as well as other paradigmatic films from his outrageous universe like Love Exposure, Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, Cold Fish (winner of the  Casa Asia Award at Sitges 2010), Himizu (screen at Sites 2011) or Bad Film (seen at Sitges 2013). Terry Jones is a member of the legendary group Monty Python and director of memorable films with the Monty Python signature like Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Meaning of Life.

The Festival will also be presenting the Time Machine Award for the lifetime achievement of legendary special effects makeup artist Rick Baker. Baker, winner of seven Oscars for Best Makeup Effects, is the father of tons of creatures and monsters over the many years of his career, and as a makeup specialist, he has participated in films like King Kong (1976), Star Wars, An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black, The Ring or Hellboy, among many others, as well as the legendary music video Thriller, by Michael Jackson.

This year, the Festival will also be paying homage to Argentinean actress Rossana Yanni, who will be receiving the Nosferatu Award. Yanni starred in numerous Spanish films during the decade of the sixties and seventies and became an icon of horror cinema under the orders of filmmakers like Jesús Franco or Amando de Ossorio. As previously announced, the Brigadoon section will be screening some of the movies from her long career, like Count Dracula’s Great Love, by Javier Aguirre or Kiss Me Monster, by Jesús Franco.

At the same time, the 48th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia will also be acknowledging the incredibly extensive film career of actor Simon Yam, who will receive the Honorary Maria Award. This versatile actor from Hong Kong has starred in almost two hundred movies, among them outstandingly masterful thrillers and action films like Bullet in the head, by John Woo, Full Contact by Ringo Lam, or genuine cult films under the orders of Johnnie To, like PTU, Breaking News, Election (screened at Sitges 2005), Election 2 or Exiled (both seen at Sitges 2006).
