'Science and scientists in cinema: from the laboratory to the screen' summer course
The Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and the Escola Joso, Centre de Còmic i Arts Visuals (Joso School, Comic and Visual Arts Center), have joined forces to organize the summer course entitled Science and scientists in cinema: from the laboratory to the screen, coordinated by professor Jordi Ojeda and the Festival’s Director, Àngel Sala.
Science and scientists have been constantly present on movie and TV screens since the very beginning of this medium, based on plays, works of literature, comics or with original screenplays. Ever since Dr. Frankenstein, fiction stories have made us reflect on human and social behavior based on scientific phenomena. Over the years, the presence of science in fantastic cinema has become customary, from the field of genetics to those of biochemistry, medicine or engineering: events have a plausible foundation to make their narration credible, be it either science or science fiction. During the course, from the perspective of different authors and origins, we will analyze how cinema has considered science and, particularly, scientists, the true stars of many of the top grossing movies in film history.
This is something that’s well-known by the genre fans who, year after year, have been able to observe this fact in the film lineup at the Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia that, in its 48 years of history, in addition to entertaining, has allowed us to travel from the laboratory to space, the final frontier.
This is the third year of this course, which will take place from July 18th to the 22nd, with completely renewed content regarding the two previous courses. Registration is already open, with a discount price period until June 23rd. For more information and enrolment, click here.
