Samsung Sitges Cocoon brings virtual reality to the Sitges Film Festival
In this room with virtual reality fantastic content, spectators will be able to immerse themselves in an insane asylum, a haunted house and cage full of zombies or even travel through space
Samsung and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia have joined forces to offer spectators a new room where you can enjoy stunning and terrifying immersive experiences thanks to Samsung Gear VR’s audiovisual contents. Every spectator will enjoy a seat, a Samsung Gear VR device with a Galaxy S7 and a headset allowing them to explore new worlds and fully immerse themselves in the action, deciding where they want to look at each moment of the story.
Virtual reality is transforming the basic aspects of film narrative and has an increasingly more prominent role in sectors like cinema and important cultural and sporting events. “Virtual reality offers creators a new way of telling stories and connecting with the audience. From our position as innovators and guides in the development of this technology, for Samsung it is an enormous satisfaction to join the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival in this new adventure of immersive cinema, different from anything else spectators knew until now”, stated Celestino García, Corporative Vice President of Samsung Spain
The Samsung Sitges Cocoon room offers a selection of fantastic artistic and technological experiences that have already captivated audiences around the world. It will be located just outside the Meliá Sitges Auditori, the Festival’s official headquarters, and will remain open from 7 to 15 October. Admission to this venue is free, and there will be a varied lineup of shorts throughout the day.
Virtual reality submerges the fantastic film spectator into the middle of the action
The selection of programmed shorts will cover the different fields of fantastic genre, from the most classic horror to family-style animated pieces. After its triumph at the SXSW in Austin, Catatonic lands in Sitges as an immersive journey through an insane asylum in which the audience is subjected to a terrifying and shocking sensorial tour. The patient, equipped with the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality device synchronized to a medical wheelchair that was created ad hoc, experiences the weight of all the insanity around him or her in a virtual environment.
On the other hand, Penrose Studios offers The Rose and I, a story for all ages about friendship, love and loss that evokes “The Little Prince” by Saint-Exupéry. Sisters is another chilling 3D animation piece that includes all of the characteristic haunted house elements. Despite its formal simplicity, the scares and the jumping out of seats are more than guaranteed for lovers of the supernatural. As for Zombie Cage, it’s a terrifying real action piece where the spectator will experience the sensation of being trapped in a cage surrounded by zombies. Finally, in Sonar, the spectator will be the commander of a space ship travelling through the depths and the rocky surface of an unknown asteroid, with an unexpected end to the trip.
Evolution of Verse is a journey to the creation of life through sensorial and poetic images that are technically close to perfection. Its echoes of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey have made this wonder the virtual reality hypeof the year. The TV series Mr. Robot, broadcast exclusively on Movistar+, has produced this immersive piece that reveals some of the secrets of its main character’s past. Finally, the virtual reality episodes of the series Halcyon will narratively complement the doubts the series might leave in its version for television.
In parallel with the room’s screenings, the Festival will produce a series of virtual reality features that will complement the perception the audience has of the Festival. These will be thematic pieces that will be posted every day in social media and that will allow people to access presentations of films or events like the Sitges Zombie Walk in a virtual reality environment. The production of this content will be done by the production company specializing in virtual reality, Mr. Fogg.
In addition, on Saturday 8 October there will be a round table discussion as a part of the Festival where different professionals connected to the field of virtual reality will present their own experience when it comes to working and developing projects with this technology in front of film industry professionals and producers attending the Festival.
“With theimplementation in Sitges of this area dedicated to the universe of virtual reality and immersive, 360º cinema, the Sitges Film Festival takes a step forward in its commitment to showing its audience the latest and most advanced in formats of audiovisual production and exhibition, positioning itself on the cutting edge in the evolution of fiction narrative in the field of film, animation and documentaries”, stated Ángel Sala, Director of the Sitges Film Festival.
