ITGES 1968-2007 - FANTASTIC VOYAGE. History of a Festival in 100 posters

The Sitges Film Festival is celebrating forty years of passionate existence. But Sitges’ history is its movies, the emotions they aroused in us, the controversies they sparked off. That’s why SITGES 1968-2007 – FANTASTIC VOYAGE. History of a Festival in 100 posters pays tribute to this history through the posters from 100 masterly, failed, curious or simply hilarious posters that have marked the competition’s character. Posters considered, today, works of art genuine works of art that, in addition, trace out a refined chronicle of the aesthetic and creative evolution of the movie poster, accomplices, in many cases, with the genius of authors like Mario Bava, Terence Fisher, Dario Argento, George A. Romero, Peter Weir, John Carpenter, Sam Raimi, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino or Hayao Miyazaki. Reproduced in full color, each poster is accompanied by a brief text with anecdotes from when it passed through Sitges, in Catalan, Spanish and English. In addition, the production of this volume was made possible through the collaboration and sponsorship of EGEDA (Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales – Entity for the Management of Audiovisual Producers’ Rights). Publica Notorius Ediciones S.L. and the Sitges-International Film Festival of Catalonia.
THE DEVIL IN CINEMA. Mask and show

This is not a book on theology, esotericism, anthropology, Satanism or psychology, although all these subjects do make sporadic appearances throughout its pages THE DEVIL IN CINEMA. Mask and show is, fundamentally, a treatise on movie culture, revolving around a very specific aspect of this culture: the representation of the Devil on the big screen and its multiple and disturbing meanings. Not leaving aside his literary and pictorial origins, this collective essay, the first on its specialty in Spain, attempts to help us penetrate unexplored mythological and artistic spaces, through movies like Curse of the Demon (Jacques Tourneur, 1957), Rosemary’s Baby (Roman Polanski, 1968), The Exorcist (William Friedkin, 1973), Race with the Devil (Jack Starret, 1975), Lucifer Rising (Kenneth Anger, 1970-1980), The Day of the Beast (Álex de la Iglesia, 1995) or The Exorcism of Emily Rose (Scott Derrickson, 2005), among many others. Famous specialists like Carlos Arenas, Joan Bassa, Tomás Fernández Valentí, Ramón Freixas, Montserrat Hormigos, José María Latorre, Jesús Palacios or Pilar Pedraza participated in its making. Illustrated with more than 200 pictures, its publication and coordination is by Antonio José Navarro, Publica Editorial Valdemar and the Sitges-International Film Festival of Catalonia.
AMERICAN GOTHIC. 1968-1980 USA horror cinema

The Vietnam War and the failure of the counterculture, the Watergate scandal, the breakdown of the traditional values of urban middle classes, the galloping economic crisis and the increase in street crime… The end of the Hollywood classic, the crimes by the Manson Family and psychopaths like Zodiac… These are, among other, the main cultural and political phenomena that marked the life of the United States during the seventies. A period of social and existential uncertainty that coincided with the last golden age of American cinema —remember the first works by De Palma, Spielberg, Coppola, Schrader, Schatzberg, Cimino…—, but also with the appearance of an imaginative, powerful, transgressive, cruel, controversial, typically American horror cinema. Now, several of the country’s best film critics analyze the different cultural and film aspects of this fascinating phenomenon through a book that’s unique in Europe. A book that will be accompanied by the screenings of titles like Night of the Living Dead (George A. Romero, 1968), The Last House on the Left (Wes Craven, 1972), Deranged (Jeff Gillen & Alan Ormsby, 1974), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974), The Devil’s Rain (Robert Fuest, 1975), The Car (Eliot Silverstein, 1977) or Tourist Trap (David Schmoeller, 1979). Published by the Sitges-International Film Festival of Catalonia and the 18th San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Week. Coordinated, once again, by critic and historian Antonio José Navarro.
