The Festival reinforces Serial Sitges, an emerging section now scaled up with more venues and new activities
Eagerly awaited premières, cult series and the latest fantastic genre TV developments all come together in the Serial Sitges section, sponsored by FNAC. Movistar+ series like Game of Thrones, Fargo, Les Revenants, The Knick or AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead will delight fans. This year, the section –created last year– is growing and will be inaugurating three new screening venues, added to the Tramuntana Room.
The passion for TV series comes to Sitges. The 48th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is reinforcing the role of the emerging Serial Sitges section, which will be bringing together episode screenings, events and tributes. Interest in TV series has increased exponentially over the years to become a cult phenomenon and the Festival hasn’t been oblivious to this trend. That’s the reason why the Festival’s lineup includes this exclusive space to discover the latest genre developments or to preview new episodes that have made their mark.
This year, Serial Sitges’ array of screenings and activities is wide-ranging and diverse. The section, which has the support of FNAC, has programmed fourteen titles, among which are, in collaboration with Movistar+, the premières of the 2nd seasons of Fargo, The Knick and Les revenants. Sitges 2015 will be screening the first episode of the second season of Fargo, the eagerly-awaited return of one of the big award winning series at the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards last year and inspired by the movie directed by the Coen Brothers (also producers of the series). You can also see the premiere of the first episode of the second season of The Knick, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen as a surgeon, as well as the long-awaited return of the acclaimed Les Revenants, the disturbing series about the “returned” directed by Fabrice Gobert, with the screening of the 5th episode of the second season, also an exclusive premiere.
Added to these premieres are the screenings of episodes from other famous series, like the first episode of the new series set in the Arctic Circle, Fortitude, starring Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon and Christopher Eccleston; the start of the second season of the horror thriller Penny Dreadful, a series created by John Logan and starring Timothy Dalton and Eva Green; the first episode of the second season of Helix, blending science fiction, horror and a devastating virus; as well as the second season of Leftovers, from the creator of Lost, Damon Lindelof, and starring Justin Theroux and Amy Brenneman, chapters assigned by Movistar+.
The remaining titles that will be completing the long list of TV series included at the 48th Film Festival are two episodes of Fear the Walking Dead, from the creator of The Walking Dead and about the start of the apocalypse of the living dead in an AMC series. This screening will be accompanied by the series’ Making Of. The section will also be showing the first three episodes of Humans, the remake that AMC did of the big hit Swedish series Real Humans –that you can also see an episode of in Serial Sitges– which presents a world where humans co-exist with some very human looking robots, but with some very disturbing special features; the animated comedy Rick & Morty, with the screening of episodes 1 and 2 from the second season; and the first episode of the first season of the French suspense series Une Chance de Trop.
Serial Sitges adds more screening venues
One of the new features this year it that Serial Sitges will be including more venues, added to the usual Tramuntana Room. This is the case of the emblematic Maricel Palace, which will be holding the screening of the final episode of the fifth season of Game of Thrones, ‘Mother’s mercy’, an episode that left fans speechless and many open questions. Following the screening, there will be a talk show dealing with the speculations revolving around the most watched series of the moment.
Another meeting point for series fans will be the Hotel Avenida Sofia where, in addition to episode screenings, a comedy show about series called Serielizados Late Show will be taking place, as well as a tribute to Hannibal including the screening of the final episode of the second season of this gruesome series starring Mads Mikkelsen and programmed by AXN. On the other hand, Serial Sitges will also be present in the Movistar+ Zone, located down in the La Fragata area, where there will be different screenings of both series and films during the first weekend of the Festival.
