Sitges 2015 will experience the apocalypse in 'Segon origen'
The Festival consolidates and strengthens its commitment to Catalan cinema
Segon Origen (Second Origin), the film directed by Carles Porta that is the movie version of the famous novel by Manuel de Pedrolo, Mecanoscrit del Segon Origen (1974), will be presented at the 48th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, to be held this upcoming 9 to 18 October. Sitges upholds a solid commitment to Catalan film production, programming genre movies made here at home year after year.
The Segon Origen project was promoted by Bigas Luna, but it was then interrupted by his death in the year 2013. The filmmaker from Lleida, Carles Porta, took over its direction and, two years later, the film will be premiering at the Sitges Film Festival. Young Alba and Dídac’s survival story, set in a post-apocalyptic scenario following a catastrophe that has devastated planet Earth, is full of symbologies and has won over readers of all ages for decades. The film, produced by Antàrtida Produccions, stars Rachel Hurd-Wood, Andrés Batista, Sergi López, Marieta Orozco and Ibrahim Mané.
Mecanoscrit del Segon Origen is the number two best seller in Catalan literature, second only to La Plaça del Diamant, by Mercè Rodoreda; and the number one science fiction genre best seller in all of Spain. The novel, considered a benchmark, has been translated to Spanish, Dutch, Basque, Galician, French, Romanian and Portuguese. It was taken to television in a big hit series, directed by Ricard Reguant, and produced and broadcast by Televisió de Catalunya during the 1985-86 season.
