Antonia Bird
Born in London on May 27, 1951, Antonia Bird was a British director, screenwriter, and producer whose career was marked by social commitment and narrative experimentation. She got her start in theater before moving to British television, where she directed episodes of series including EastEnders and Casualty. Her theatrical training and interest in politically-charged human stories were reflected across her work.
In the realm of genre, Antonia Bird is particularly remembered for Ravenous (1999), a horror film with western and cannibalistic elements set in the 19th century. With a dark and satirical tone and an unsettling atmosphere, Ravenous has become a cult classic in fantastic genre. The film was presented at the 32nd edition of the Sitges Film Festival. She died prematurely in 2013, leaving behind a short but extremely powerful filmography.
