The Festival’s awards took on the now-iconic form of Metropolis's Maria, based on a design by Sergi Almendros i Cuyás. The Retiro gardens saw the birth of Brigadoon, a free video screening space that would become essential to the Festival. Anthony Perkins came to Sitges to present Psycho III, the third installment in the Norman Bates saga, which he both directed and starred in. No fewer than three Hammer icons visited Sitges: producer Michael Carreras, director Roy Ward Baker (also a jury member), and the legendary Christopher Lee. Two tributes were held: one to André Delvaux and another to Michael Powell, who attended accompanied by his wife, the great film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.
