The Festival's awards were modeled after the now canonical Maria from Metropolis, based on a design by Sergi Almendros i Cuyás. The Retiro Gardens saw the birth of Brigadoon, a free video screening venue that would become an essential part of the Festival. Anthony Perkins visited the Festival to present Psycho III, the third installment in the Norman Bates saga, which he both directed and starred in. No fewer than three Hammer icons made an appearance in Sitges: producer Michael Carreras, director Roy Ward Baker (member of the jury), and the legendary Christopher Lee. And there were two tributes this year: one to André Delvaux and the other to Michael Powell, who was accompanied by his wife, the brilliant film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.
