The film competition was renamed the International Film Festival of Catalonia. Douglas Trumbull was honored with the Time Machine Award. Wong Kar-wai, Marco Bellocchio, Chris Penn, Guillermo del Toro, Stephen Fry, Paul Schrader, Jiri Barta, and Paco Rabal all attended the Festival. As well as a young actor who lived in the neighboring town of Vilanova i la Geltrú: Sergi López. Three big names were featured in the retrospectives: José Mojica Marins, Guy Maddin, and Charles Band. And two films were the big highlights of the Anima't section: Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon and I Married a Stranger by Bill Plympton.
