Takashi Miike visited Sitges for the first time and received the Time Machine Award. Other honorees included Tobe Hooper, Stan Winston, Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, and Narciso Ibáñez Serrador. The Festival celebrated the work of Curtis Harrington, and Orient Express paid tribute to the late Chang Cheh, a legend of the Shaw Brothers studio. Once the Festival was underway, the stars aligned: Kill Bill: Vol. 1, by Quentin Tarantino, had its Spanish premiere at Sitges.
