The word “fantastic” was finally reinstated in the Festival's official name. This year's edition opened with the long-awaited sequel to [REC]. The film that brought the Festival to a close was John Hillcoat's post-apocalyptic drama The Road, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy and starring Viggo Mortensen, who attended the Festival. There were many award winners this year: Malcolm McDowell, Walter Hill, Park Chan-wook, Herschell Gordon Lewis, José Ramón Larraz, Antonio Isasi-Isasmendi, Shinya Tsukamoto, Ivan Reitman, Clive Barker, Elías Querejeta, Samuel Hadida, Jordi Llompart, and Jack Taylor. Among the special guests were some familiar faces, including Gaspar Noé, no stranger to controversy thanks to Enter the Void, and the then lesser-known Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg. And there was also plenty of buzz around Nicolas Winding Refn's double feature, Bronson and Valhalla Rising.
