The SGAE Foundation and the Sitges Film Festival Announce the 1st Josefina Molina Award

The SGAE Foundation and the SITGES-International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, in support of fantastic genre content created by women within the audiovisual field, and in order to encourage promotional frameworks that foster a greater recognition of the quality of work by female writers in this sector, are announcing the 1st Josefina Molina Award for Best Fantastic Feature Film Screenplay by a Woman 2025. 

With a cash prize of €10,000 and named in honor of filmmaker Josefina Molina, a pioneer of Spanish fantastic genre with her film Vera, un cuento cruel (1973), the award is intended for female writers who are members of the SGAE, regardless of nationality, submitting original, fantastic-themed feature film screenplays.

The submission period will remain open until July 14, 2025. Those female screenwriters who wish to participate must send their scripts and all the information required in the rules and regulations by email to iarmanda@fundacionsgae.org with the following heading in the subject line: “1st Josefina Molina Award for Best Fantastic Feature Film Screenplay by a Woman – Competition Entry.”

The Winner at the 58th Sitges Film Festival 
This award is also promoted through WomanInFan, the Sitges Film Festival's program dedicated to promoting and raising awareness of women in the industry. The Award Jury’s final decision will be announced at a public ceremony during the 58th Sitges Film Festival, which will take place in the city of Sitges (Barcelona) from October 9 to 19, 2025.

About Josefina Molina
Josefina Molina (Córdoba, 1936) was the first woman to obtain a degree in Film Directing from the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía (Official Film School) and was awarded the Honorary Goya Award in 2012 for her contribution to Spanish filmmaking. Her career has combined works for both film and television. Among her works, one of the most notable is her debut film, Vera, un cuento cruel (1973), where she dared to venture into the fantastic genre, becoming Spain's first female creator in this genre. However, it was in 1981 with Night Function that she truly achieved professional success. Other examples of her work include: Esquilache, The Most Natural Thing and La Lola se va a los puertos. Her filmography also includes four short films: La otra soledad (1966), Aquel humo gris (1967), Melodrama infernal (1967), and La rama seca (1972). On television, she directed outstanding productions including Escrito en América, Teatro de siempre, El camino, Teresa de Jesús, and Entre naranjos, among others. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Mujer de Cine (Woman in Film) Award from the Instituto de la Mujer (Women's Institute), and is honorary president of the Asociación de Mujeres Cineastas (CIMA, Association of Women Filmmakers).
