Topography of the female-led fantasy genre
Imagen

The cultural and social patterns that prevail in the film industry have traditionally identified certain genres as typical of female sensibility, entrusting the leadership of projects within terror, science fiction, action or thriller, for example, to male creators; while, on the other hand, women do not identify fantastic as a genre within their reach.

And although they have traditionally been a 'rare breed', fantastic genre feature films directed by women have emerged, especially in recent years, giving way to a more than interesting quarry in which names such as Karen Arthur, Mary Harron, Claire Denis, Marina de Van, Jennifer Lynch, Katryn Bigelow, the Wachowski sisters, Karyn Kusama, Anna Bonner, Julia Ducournau and a long etcetera stand out.

This study on female filmmakers in the fantastic genre is not without its contention, which naturally arose as a result of the greater media attention to women and their link with terror: should we continue to expose to the public this minority statistic and the unequal treatment of industry towards women in the fantastic genre, or should we begin to normalise the work of female filmmakers in this field?

Perhaps one of the most stimulating aspects in the short term for women in the fantastic genre is being able to finally configure their particular narrative, through a different approach or sensitivity, or not, but in any case in projects signed and led by them.

Monstruos, criaturas y pesadillas engendrados por ellas
Imagen

For a new world of goddesses and monsters! And let us remember, to paraphrase Vampira, that demons can be a woman's best friends.

This book traces the more or less established history of titles related to traditions such as extremism, rape and revenge, slasher, science fiction, and zombies, showcasing female talent in major (and not so major) works within the fantasy genre.

Since we're paying tribute to creativity, we've decided to include the careers of the famous “Horror TV Hosts,” true champions of the genre's popularity, who, through their very presence on the big screen, gave rise to true icons of popular culture. We are referring, of course, to Vampira (Maila Nurmi), Moona Lisa, and the indefatigable Elvira, who remains active at the helm of her Queen B Productions, elevating her macabre femininity to the heights of merchandising.
