Ferran Freixa designed the iconic logo of King Kong looming over the Punta church, which became a lasting symbol of the Festival. Bigas Luna and playwright/director Jaime de Armiñán were part of the jury. Among all the guests, the one who drew the most attention was Ray Harryhausen, who brought with him a display of the creatures he handcrafted through stop-motion animation—creatures that still awaken a sense of wonder in audiences today. Jean Cocteau’s poetic imagination was honored with an exhibition and a screening of Le testament d’Orphée. The recovery of Stalker, Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece, was met with great acclaim. This was also the year the Festival screened its first film directed by a woman: The Silent One by New Zealander Yvonne Mackay.
