The Festival opened with Guillermo del Toro and his fable set during the Spanish Civil War, Pan's Labyrinth. Paul Verhoeven presented Black Book, the film that marked his return to Europe, and was presented with the Grand Honorary Award. Other award winners included Alejandro Jodorowsky, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Alejandro Amenábar, special makeup FX artist Howard Berger, Luis de Val, and Victor Israel. Among the jury members was a legend of the American underground: Monte Hellman. The always surprising Noves Visions lineup featured two radical offerings: It's Gradiva Who Is Calling You, avant-garde filmmaker Alain Robbe-Grillet's, final film, and Electroma, an unclassifiable audiovisual artifact created by electronic music sensations Daft Punk.
