Synopsis

This documentary explores the history of what was the first major horror film craze of the 21st century, J-horror, from its unknown origins to seminal works of the genre such as The Ring (1998) and Ju-on: The Grudge (2002). Through a series of interviews with its most important representatives, this film reveals how these supernatural tales address major philosophical questions regarding contemporary life.

Appleton is a British documentary filmmaker, best known for directing The Found Footage Phenomenon (2021) and working on Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021), two films that were screened at the Festival in 2021. Sharper is a filmmaker, programmer and writer specializing in Japanese cinema.
