Cinema is a powerful tool for sensibilization and social transformation. The biggest monsters that threaten the oceans are not alien creatures or mythological beasts, but rather the effects of our own actions over nature.
Sitges Fantastic Film Festival is one of the most recognized festivals devoted to fantastic and horror genres. And, if we think about it, what is more misterious, majestic and, at the same time, unsettling thant the depths of the sea?
Fantastic cinema has been able to explore our relation with the sea for decades. Think about classic films like Jaws or The Abyss, or histories about underwater monsters that have populated the screen. This form of art, so very powerful for awakening emotions, is a unique tool to showcase not just the beauty and majesty of the oceans, but also their fragility and the dangers threatening them, which are mostly real and not fictional. Through cinema, we can create histories that capture our imagination and, at the same time, move us to think about the importance of taking care of the seas and their inhabitants. Cetaceans, for instance, are creatures which could spring from a fantastic tale: intelligent, misterious, able to communicate using almost otherwordly sounds... But their habitat is endangered because of pollution, the climate change and resource overexploitation. Cinema is a powerful tool for sensibilization and social transformation. The biggest monsters that threaten the oceans are not alien creatures or mythological beasts, but rather the effects of our own actions over nature. Terror and science-fiction films have warned time and again about the danger of destroying the environment, and genre cinema is a perfect tool to achieve that, because it connects us emotionally with these worlds.
ENJOY THE FESTIVAL AND SAVE OUR SEA!
