Phil Tippett
Sitges Encounters include talks with great figures of genre cinema, all participants in this edition.
More than 40 years of experience have established the director and producer Phil Tippett as one of the great geniuses of special effects. His incursion in the industry was hand in hand with George Lucas, who was preparing the feature film A New Hope (1977), from the Star Wars saga. Throughout animation made by stop-motion, his work method marked a milestone in the 80’s and 90’s Hollywood. Recognition didn’t take long to appear: 2 Academy Awards, 6 Academy Award nominations, 1 BAFTA, 2 Emmys and the Georges Méliès Awards from the Visual Effects Society.
Tippet’s long career has created some of the most emblematic characters of cinema, such as Jabba The Hutt from Star Wars or the iconic dinosaurs from Jurassic Park (1993). However, Tippett felt forced to adapt to an emerging digital revolution that completely changed the way visual effects were designed.
Phil Tippett currently has his own visual effects and animation’s studio, called Tippett Studio, where he has produced his own films as well, for example Mad God (2021).
