Encounter - MaestrAs - Carmen Maura

Sitges MaestrAs celebrates the talent, perspective, and influence of the women who have shaped the path of genre cinema. Directors, screenwriters, editors, world-builders—masters of horror, suspense, and fantasy—their careers have pushed the boundaries of the fantastic and opened new doors for future generations.

With more than 150 films under her belt, this Spanish actress has built her career here in Spain, as well as in France and Mexico. Winner of four Goya Awards, a César Award, and an award for Best Actress in Cannes, she began working with Spanish filmmakers such as Luis Buñuel, Pilar Miró, Fernando Colomo, and Carlos Saura, until in 1980 she became an Almodóvar girl thanks to Pepi, Luci, Bom, and Other Girls Like Mom. Vieja loca isn't her first foray into genre films: De la Iglesia made her the leading lady in Common Wealth (2000) and a cannibal witch in Witching and Bitching (2013), while Almodóvar dressed her up as a ghost in Volver (2006).

In this year, she receives the Honorary Grand Award, in recognition of an extraordinary career that has defied categorization and opened doors for generations of performers. Her presence at the festival celebrates not only her legacy, but also her irreverent and fiercely free spirit.
