Round Table - TAC Presents: Catalonia, a Fantastic Land. Folklore, Myths and Legends in the Service of Catalan Genre Cinema
TAC (Terror Arreu de Catalunya) is a network of fantastic and horror film festivals spread across the region, working together to promote and give visibility to genre cinema made in Catalonia. For the second year in a row, TAC is hosting a roundtable at Sitges that highlights the value of Catalan genre filmmaking, with the aim of promoting the Catalan language and showcasing the territory’s cultural richness through fantastic and horror cinema.
Catalonia is a land of ancient tales, magical creatures, and legends passed down through generations. From the Pyrenean mountains to the Mediterranean coast, Catalan popular imagination is filled with stories of witches, water maidens, demons, giants, and beings that have shaped the cultural identity of the territory.
This roundtable will explore how this rich folkloric heritage serves as a source of inspiration for Catalonia’s fantastic and genre cinema. Filmmakers, researchers, and industry professionals will discuss how myths and traditions are reinterpreted on screen, giving rise to films rooted in the local context yet with international reach.
Participants: Paul Urkijo, filmmaker; Hugo Cobo, filmmaker; Magdalena Oliver, filmmaker; Ivana Miño, actress and director of the Tabaca Film Fest; and Karen Madrid, cultural journalist.
Language: Spanish and Catalan
