Horror Girls
WomanInFan Europe
The first horror film directed by a woman in Spain was released in 1973. The film was 'Vera, un cuento cruel' and the person behind it, Josefina Molina. More than fifty years later, only about twenty women directors have approached this genre in our country. Which political, social and cultural factors have influenced in making the fantastic genre a terrain of overwhelmingly male auteurship is part of the analysis presented in the new volume of WomanInFan, focused on European productions. The title Horror Girls. WomanInFan Europe pays homage to the late film historian David J. Skal, who defined himself as a monster boy. In this regard, the volume exposes the groundbreaking and referential European horror girls, and focuses especially on four different filmographies: those of Spain, France, Germany and Italy. Mònica García Massagué (who also acts as coordinator), Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Ángel Sala, Olivia Cooper-Hadjian, Marcus Stiglegger and Manlio Gomarasca all participate in this volume.
