As was usual for him, Ingmar Bergman concealed his personal anxieties about the reception of his works in this period fable with fantastic overtones. Set in the 19th century, it follows a troupe led by a magician and hypnotist as they arrive in a village, where they will be subjected to all sorts of humiliations by the skeptical inhabitants, who will challenge them to test their alleged magical powers.
