The Countess

de Julie Delpy

Early 17th century. Countess Erzebet Bathory begins a romance with the young Istvan, until his father forces them to separate. Amidst her sorrow over the breakup, the spiteful countess starts to fear for the passing of time, the first wrinkles, the burden of age. She then finds a solution: to drink the blood of young virgin girls and turn her castle into a killing machine worthy of Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd. Julie Delpy shows her crudest facet and makes use of this legend previously adapted for the screen to create a dark, austere horror movie that honestly reflects the period and splatters it with surprising moments of gore.
