If Vincenzo Natali’s previous movies revolved around a lack of spatial identity (Cube, Nothing) or personal identity (Cypher), Splice tackles the subject of the induced evolution of the species. Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley are two scientists who create a new hybrid breed, harmless at first, but that soon develops predatory and even sexual characteristics. An atypical monster movie, with details from Mimic (Guillermo del Toro backs the film) or Species, but that is surprising thanks to the excellent use of special effects and the plot’s unexpected ramifications. Vincenzo Natali

He debuted with Cube (97), a film that earned him the award for best feature film at Sitges 1998. At the Festival we also had the chance to see Cypher (02) and Splice (09). In addition, he has directed episodes of highly stylized series such as Hannibal or Westworld.
