Somos lo que hay (We are what we are)
Synopsis
A Mexican family has made their existence conditional on practicing a ritual that includes cannibalism. When the father dies, the older son is forced to take charge in order to bring home food and keep the family united. Dark, sordid and shockingly real, this year Somos lo que hay once again proves that genre cinema is still capable of manufacturing important works without falling into self-satisfaction. Its best weapons: an excellent casting and a screenplay and camera that observe and suggest, that hopelessly but firmly penetrate the destitution of a marginal atmosphere awaiting tragedy. Categorical.
