Trailer
Synopsis
The NHK television station wanted to pay tribute to kaidan, making four famous filmmakers a proposal to direct screen versions of four different stories. In Kata-ude, Masayuki Ochiai adapts a strange, suggestive story by Yasunari Kawabata where a man asks a beautiful woman to lend him her arm to get through the night. In Nochi no Hi, Hirokazu Kore-eda proposes a married couple’s encounter with a mysterious boy who might be the ghost of their deceased son. With Hana Lee Sang-il goes back to the Heian period in the story of a monk, victim of humiliations because of his enormous, deformed nose. And Shinya Tsukamoto proves to be more intimistic than ever in Hazakura to Mateki, the portrayal of a woman and her ambivalent feelings towards her sick sister.

Ochiai has carved out a reputation for himself among genre lovers with films like Shutter (2008). Kore-eda is one of the most prestigious directors in Japan, thanks to films like Nobody Knows (04) or Still Walking (08). Sang-il is known above all for his celebrated Hula Girls (06). Shinya Tsukamoto is one of the most radical and visionary present-day filmmakers. Tetsuo: The Iron Man (89), Tokyo Fist (95) or Vital (04) testify to that.
