Before dying, Asuna’s father gave his daughter a peculiar crystal radio. With it, she goes up into the mountains to tune in strange melodies. One day a monster attacks Asuna, who is rescued by Shun, a young man from the parallel dimension of Agartha. Wanting to meet up with her new friend again, Asuna asks her teacher to help her find the way to enter this mythical world. Based freely on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Makoto Shinkai’s third film confirms him as one of today’s greatest animators, a creator of unique universes, with a boundless imagination and exquisite aesthetical taste.
After studying Japanese literature, he worked as a graphic designer at the video game company Falcom. The Place Promised in Our Early Days (04) was his feature debut, and in 2016 he had an enormous hit with Your Name.
