SITGES – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia offers this activity to display Sitges' biodiversity. The goal is to observe, photograph and identify as many underwater species as possible, thus contributing to the BioMARató and the project "Platges del CEM". The captured images will be shared in the platform MINKA, a citizen science project by Institu de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC), in order to foster the knowledge of biodiversity in our beaches, and to increase sensibilization about their conservation.

The activity is organized by the Centre d’Estudis del Mar de Sitges (CEM), the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) and Anèl·lides - Serveis Ambientals Marins.

Important:

  • All participants must be able to swim.
  • Participants must be at least 12, and childrem must be accompanied by an adult.
  • You must bring your own camera to capture the images of underwater flora and fauna. If you do not have an underwater camera, the organization will provide a limited amount, but it is strongly recommended that you bring your own material.
  • This is a free activity, but booking is required and is limited to 20 participants.

Schedule:

  • 09:30 h: Welcome and presentation. Handing out of neoprene and snorkel materials.
  • 09:45 h - 11:45 h: Snorkel to identify and photograph underwater species in the beaches of CEM.
  • 11:45 h - 12:30 h: Presentation of the citizen science platform MINKA, sharing of the species observed and closure.

About the CEM:

The Centre d’Estudis del Mar de Sitges, created in 1983, is a referent in sea environmental education. It works to promote sensibilization on the topic and offer spaces for citizen participation in the context of climate emergence and loss of biodiversity.
