The exhibition 'Cinema is Fantastic' illustrates the history of the Sitges Film Festival

The Catalonian Film Library joins in the celebration of this film competition’s 50 years with an exhibition and a retrospective including the 50 most representative movies from over the course of its history

The Catalonian Film Library and the Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia co-produce the exhibition Cinema is Fantastic, that can be seen from June 22nd to September 17th at the Film Library’s headquarters in Barcelona’s Raval neighborhood and, starting the first week of October, in Sitges, coinciding with opening day of this year’s Festival.

Curated by Diego López, the exhibition is an invitation to a journey through the history the Festival’s fifty years via a wide variety of films screened here and attending guests, that have helped to make this film competition become a benchmark event, not only among genre specialists, but also on the global international cinematic scene.

Along with this exhibit, the Film Library has also programmed a retrospective of fifty movies that have been an important part of the Festival’s history. The film series will open with The Evil Dead (Sam Raimi, 1981) and will include big hits like The Exorcist (William Friedkin, 1973), remakes like The Thing (John Carpenter, 1982), in addition to musicals like Streets of Fire (Walter Hill, 1984), the violent and controversial Hostel (Eli Roth, 2005), the experimental intellectuality of The Pillow Book (Peter Greenaway 1996), the classic Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino, 1992), the Japanese Ringu (Hideo Nakata, 1998) and national movies like Més Enllà de la Passió (Jesús Garay, 1986), The Day of the Beast (Álex de la Iglesia, 1995) or REC (Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza, 2007) among many others.
