Udo Kier receives the Time Machine Award

The crew from ‘Brawl in Cell Block 99’ lands at the Festival with Vince Vaughn as the big star

This Monday, Sitges’ red carpet was visited by the legendary actor of German origin Udo Kier, a living legend of fantastic film, who at the age of 72 received the Time Machine Award and presented the prison thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99, along with Hollywood star Vince Vaughn and filmmaker S. Craig Zahler. The day was rounded off with the world premiere of the Mexican film El Habitante, the screening of the French production Revenge and the presentation of the Spanish film Dhogs. At the same time, the Festival kept up its intense schedule of parallel events, both aimed at professional sector and the general public: today the turn was for the editorial industry and new presentations of genre books.

There are those who think a film festival’s rhythm slacks off on Monday. Well they’ve probably never been to Sitges. The main event of the day featured the crew from the American movie Brawl in Cell Block 99. Filmmaker S. Craig Zahler –known for his brilliant debut film, Bone Tomahawk–, paraded down the red carpet at the Meliá Sitges Auditori along with Hollywood celebrity Vince Vaughn, and legendary actor Udo Kier. During the ceremony prior to the film’s screening, Udo Kier received the Time Machine Award from Ángel Sala, Festival Director. Along with Vaughn, the actor of German origin –with a filmography including more than 200 movies– stars in one of the films programmed for tonight in Sitges, after winning at the Toronto Film Festival.

The list of films was completed with the world premiere of El Habitante, by Uruguayan Guillermo Amoedo, winner of the Award for Best Latin American Feature Film with The Stranger in 2014. The film crew walked the red carpet, headed by Guillermo Amoedo, actresses Vanessa Restrepo and Gabriela de la Garza, along with producers Rodrigo Bello and Rodrigo Trujillo. El Habitante –which is a part of the Official Fantastic In Competition Selection– is a demonic nightmare involving three sisters who find a young woman with signs of having been tortured in the house of a corrupt senator. On the other hand, French director Coralie Fargeat also defended her debut feature today in Sitges: Revenge exudes a violence with a nod to classic from the 70s, and contains a final climax that will be a dream for fantastic genre lovers. A considerable representation of the crew from Dhogs –including its director Andrés Goteira, actors Carlos Blanco and Melania Cruz, and producer Suso López, among others –presented the movie in Sitges. It’s an independent product that tells the story of the chance meeting between a businessman and a mysterious woman, that transports us to a clandestine adventure, a dessert and a crime;

Today Taboo’ks day united the editorial and film industries. During the event –presided over by Mònica Garcia, Deputy Director of the Sitges Foundation, and Patrici Tixis, chairman of the Catalan Association of Publishers– they announced the five fantastic genre literary projects aspiring to become a movie adaptation following a selection process with the participation of 60 novels. El efecto Midas, by Manuel Dorado; La casa de las cruces, by David Chevalier; Proyecand Agatha escribía con sangre, by Mariano F. Urresti, were the novels chosen for the first edition of Taboo’ks. American screenwriter and author Nick Antosca, creator of the television horror series Channel Zero –presented as a part of the Serial Sitges lineup this year– offered advice, analysis and visions about how to takea literary work to screen: “A literal adaptation isn’t the best option, the screenwriter or the director has to get involved, offer his or her point of view, explore the literary work and transport it to cinematic language. In this regard, the adaptation of Apocalypse Now is exemplary”.

The Festival parallel events were rounded off today with the presentation of the book Algo en la sangre (Something in the Blood), a biography of Bram Stoker, by writer and film critic David J. Skal, famous for his analysis and research on both horror movies and literature, and who is a part of the Official Selection Jury at Sitges 2017.
