Seminar ?Both sides of fear?

Psychology defines fear as the emotion that responds to impending danger, usually leading to a disgusting feeling. The film maker Woody Allen, however, conceives it as his most beloved companion; that one, who will never cheat on him, will never be unfaithful to him.

Companion and emotion, both terms capture, in fact, wonderfully what it is known as the fear experience. Faster heartbeat, widen eyes, cold sweat are the ingredients that shape the old mate that accompanied humans from the beginning.

Fear is a survival mechanism. It is an evolutionary strategy that we shared with other higher organism to allow us to recognise harmful situations and respond to potentially dangerous events. Fear's workings are simple. They prepare us for a quick command: flight or fight'But unlike other animals, we also seem to have developed a penchant for feeling this urge to whether flight or fight. Indeed, fear forms the basis of our enjoyment of countless thrillers, horror movies, and violent games, too. What exactly is fear then'

The workshop 'BOTH SIDES OF FEAR', organized by the Chair 'the social brain' (www.elcervellsocial.org) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, invites you to find out the answers behind questions such as why do we feel fear' When it results into pleasure' or Why are some people hooked on it' The 6th and 7th of October at 16:00h, at the Miramar building, all these questions will be analyzed from a neurobiological perspective. In addition, film directors that work in the horror genre who participate in the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya ' Sitges 2007 will provide us with their personal vews about fear.
