Von Trier's 'Melancholia' and Soderbergh's 'Contagion' head a spectacular OF Panorama Selection

The end of the world will be the main theme of Official Fantàstic Panorama Selection, complementary to Official Fantàstic in Competition section, demonstrating the paranoia experienced by today’s society, an after effect of the September 2001 bombings in the USA and prompted by the obsession for this date in the year 2012.

Melancholia, Danish director Lars Von Trier’s long-awaited film, will be one of the Festival’s important titles, with its poetic vision of a global cataclysm caused by the collision of the Earth and a wandering planet. Melancholia has an all-star cast including, among others, Kirsten Dunst (winner of the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Festival for this film), John Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Charlotte Rampling.

On the other hand, Steven Soderbergh also deals with a global catastrophe in Contagion, in this case the spreading of a lethal virus throughout the entire planet. Contagion (currently being presented at the Venice Festival), also includes important actors like Matt Damon, Gywneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne or Jude Law.

In addition to these titles there is Béla Tarr’s apocalyptic vision in the previously announced The Turin Horse (winner of the Special Jury Award at the latest Berlin Festival). The selection will also present other important events in this year’s fantastic cinema like the terrifying Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, produced by Guillermo Del Toro; the vampire epic The Moth Diaries, by Mary Haron, director of American Psycho; the spectacular 3D Korean blockbuster Sector 7 or the sinister version of the Jane Eyre, starring Michael Fassbender. Added to all this is the previously announced Mientras duermes (Sleep Tight), Jaume Balagueró’s disturbing psychological thriller.

The Official Fantàstic Panorama Selection will also be offering excellent proposals like the adult animation film Eric Koo’s Tatsumi, or the adrenaline-packed Drive, by Nicolas Winding-Refn, best director at the last Cannes Film Festival.
