Sitges brings together Pascal Laugier?s horror story and Daniel Calparsoro?s war thriller

Sitges’ most loyal audiences will undoubtedly remember the name Pascal Laugier as the director who shook up the Festival in 2008 with his controversial Martyrs. The French filmmaker returns to Sitges today presenting The Tall Man, a film which leaves extreme violence aside and delves deep into ancestral fears. "I wanted to explore modern myths while not giving exact answers, but talking about present society and social classes," Laugier said at the press conference. The film, starring Jessica Biel, revolves around child disappearances and a mysterious superhuman character. Laugier announced a future collaboration with Dario Argento and denounced the French press’ bias against genre movies.

A very different proposal arrives from Daniel Calparsoro and his Invasor, a film starring Alberto Amman, Inma Cuesta and Karra Elejalde, who are also in Sitges, and which is an adaptation of Fernando Marias’ novel. The film poses the moral dilemma of an army doctor, who has to decide "what he is willing to risk to save his dignity," in the words of Calparsoro. A film criticizing the structures of the Nation, the army and the media: "It is not an ambiguous film, it portrays the system without self-censorship." Catalan director Oscar Aibar, who will be presenting his latest film tomorrow, El bosc, in the Official Fantàstic Selection, recovers his 2003 film Platillos volantes at the Prado movie theater, set in 1970s Terrassa.

Tonight, fans of Japanese cinema have an absolute must date with the Japan Madness Marathon and three movies that guarantee a fun screening, mixing blood, zaniness, comedy, horror, and anime. These are: Dead Sushi, Sadako 3D and Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack, by Noboru Iguchi, Tsutomu Hanabusa and Takayuki Hirao, respectively.
