The Festival FIC-CAT brings fantastic cinema on board hand in hand with Sitges
The Costa Daurada International Festival of Cinema in Catalan (FIC-CAT) will be including significant involvement from Sitges and Catalan fantastic cinema, thanks to an agreement between the two organizations. The FIC-CAT will be held from 2 to 7 June, in Roda de Berà (Tarragonès region) and will be adding a new category for its screenings: “PANTALLA SITGES”, sponsored by the Sitges Film Festival.
This agreement will allow the FIC-CAT to program diverse science fiction, horror and fantasy films that have been previously screened in Sitges. Sitges Film Festival Director Àngel Sala will be in Roda de Berà to present the category and observe the Tarragonian festival’s progress from up close. Sala knows the FIC-CAT quite well, having already participated in previous editions as a member of the jury. The agreement between the two festivals is the start of a collaboration that will help publicize and highlight the importance of fantastic cinema in the Catalan audiovisual industry, and play a significant role in validating the feature length and short films that premiered this year and making them more visible.
The feature length film L’altra frontera, directed by André Cruz Shiraiwa, will be the star of “PANTALLA SITGES” this year. The film presents a dystopian reality where Hannah and her son Lleó must escape from a war that has isolated their country. As they try to cross the border, they enter No Man’s Land, a refugee camp that provides them with roam and board, but that will subject them to a severely oppressive system that forces them to compete to be able to stay at the camp.
The Sitges Film Festival’s agreement with the Costa Daurada International Festival of Cinema in Catalan joins a series of additional alliances created recently with other genre festivals, like Tàrrega’s Galacticat Festival or the Maremonstruo category at Palma de Mallorca’s Maremostra Festival.
