Mobile World Capital and the Sitges Festival create Phonetastic to promote cinema via the mobile phone
Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) and the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia are promoting the Sitges Phonetastic Mobile Film Festival event, an initiative for the development of mobile devices – smartphones and tablets – as a film production tool and an audiovisual distribution platform. This project, which will also include the participation of the Dr. Watson agency as a founding member, is a part of Capital’s mContent program that will promote new forms of leisure and entertainment via mobile technologies.
To promote this cinematic discipline, MWCapital and the Sitges Festival will be organizing conferences and workshops on audiovisual production via mobile devices. These sessions will be run by film directors and carried out during the Summer Week, the week of mobile-related cultural activities organized each summer as a part of the Mobile World Festival, one of MWCapital’s pillars.
In addition, they will also be coordinating the Sitges Phonetastic Mobile Film Festival Awards, new prizes for the best short film shot with mobile phones and tablets. To be eligible for an award, all interested filmmakers must register on Phonetastic’s future website, which will be publishing the competition’s terms and conditions as well as where the shorts are to be delivered. The winners will be announced during the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.
According to the CEO of MWCapital, Ginés Alaracón, Phonetastic is “an initiative that fits in perfectly with the mContent programs’ goals, focusing on the world of cultural industries and entertainment, with a very pronounced mobile component and which will make it possible to develop new business opportunities hand in hand with what is undoubtedly a world reference in its sector, the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival”.
Moreover, the Director-General of the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia Foundation, Josep Lluís Galan, expressed his excitement over this new project, given that “it will be an essential core element of the Festival’s strategic plan for the next few years. An event like the Sitges Festival must meet the demands of spectators and audiovisual creators and with Phonetastic, the Festival will be promoting two essential aspects that are a part of its DNA: creativity and new technologies.” The project has the full support of the Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals (ICEC) and the Sitges Town Council.
Phonetastic’s artistic direction will be in the hands of Àngel Sala, Director of the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and its Deputy Director, Mike Hostench. Creativity will be covered by the Dr. Watson agency, Base Zero will prepare its sponsorship strategy and sales dossier, and DICOM Events will be in charge of the Festival’s design and architecture.
