José Antonio Fideu wins the Minotauro Award, to be presented to him at Sitges 2016

For the third year running, the International Fantastic and Science Fiction Literature Award will be associated with the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia

Los últimos años de la magia (The Final Years of Magic), a fantastic novel by José Antonio Fideu, is the winner of the 2016 Minotauro Award, a prize that will be presented to him as a part of the 49th Sitges Festival. The Jury’s meeting and verdict took place on Monday June 20th in Barcelona.

In this rich and complex work, sprinkled with touches of steampunk, the author introduces readers to a very credible world that will completely absorb them. A world where magic is real and true, but is pursued by the powerful. The result is a thrilling story that also combines a sense of travel and adventure, as envisaged by Jules Verne, and where very well-known, legendary characters appear, now totally reinterpreted.

Los últimos años de la magia earned the unanimous vote of the Minotauro Award Jury, this year composed of writers Javier Sierra and Manel Loureiro, the Director of the del Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, Ángel Sala, movie producer Adrián Guerra and the editor in chief of Ediciones Minotauro publishing house, Marcela Serras.

For the third year, the Minotauro Award will be associated with the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia which, in its 49th year, will be hosting the press conference and Award presentation. This initiative connects the International Fantastic and Science Fiction Literature Award to the world’s number one fantastic film festival, and aims to offer all genre fans the opportunity to enjoy and participate in the event that is the awarding of this prize.

José Antonio Fideu, born in Albacete in 1972, is a writer and comic scriptwriter. With a degree in education, he combines his vocation for teaching with his other great passion: storytelling. After publishing his first comic script (Núbilus), Núbilus (the novel) appeared in 2009. Subsequently, the Planeta de Agostini publishing house published two other comics with scripts written by him (Alma and Las increíbles aventuras del Duque Dementira). Fideu also published the series Los archivos del Capitán Meteoro (a novel in installments) on one of the most highly-visited websites dedicated to comics (www.zonanegativa.com).

The book goes on sale on the 4th of October 2016 and on October 11th, it will be presented in Sitges at a 12:00 press conference attended by the author and members of the Jury. The official Award presentation will also be on the 11th, at approximately 20:00, before the screening of one of the Festival’s films. In addition, on Wednesday October 12th, the book will be presented to the general public at the FNAC tent in Sitges.

This is the 13th year of the International Fantastic and Science Fiction Literature Award by Ediciones Minotauro. Authors like Javier Negrete, León Arsenal, Carlos Sisí, Carlos Molinero or Elio Quiroga are among its winners and it has established itself as a genre literature benchmark, valued in 6.000 euros.
