Sitges becomes the world's first film festival to accept cryptocurrency for ticketing and festival passes

Slate Entertainment Group (SEG) and Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia (Sitges) have entered into a partnership where Sitges will adopt SEG's blockchain based digital ticketing platform, Slatix, powered by Slate (SLX) digital currency, for the purchase of tickets and festival passes. This will mark the first time in industry history that a film festival will accept cryptocurrency as well as traditional forms of payment.

Tickets that will be purchased on the Slatix blockchain ticketing application will have near zero transaction fees, are forgery resistent virtually eliminating fraud, and are instantly transferable.  Slatix will make buying, transfering, and redeaming tickets seamless.

SEG will have a strong presence at the festival, heading blockchain panels focused on their platforms and how this new technology may revolutionize the production and distribution of content globally.

“We are tremendously excited to enter the blockchain space at its inception. We have always been known as a film festival that is a leader in technology and in the genre film space including VR, and feel this development is consistent with that tradition.  As a festival our responsibility is to support independent filmmakers and we are truly excited to work with the Slate Entertainment Group, who like us, believes in fairness and transparency for content creators and producers,” says Sitges Deputy Director Mike Hostench.

Sitges, now in its 51st year, is the number one fantasy film festival in the world, with 200,000 visitors expected to descend upon the Catalonian sea-side village.  In years past, it has featured such luminaries as Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, and patron Guillermo del Toro, whose film The Shape of Water opened the 2017 festival and went on to win multiple Oscars including “Best Picture”. Sitges is a favourite of genre fans with its annual Zombie Walk, world and international premiers, midnight screenings and retrospectives of horror, science fiction and fantasy classics.

“We are truly excited for this partnership as Sitges has always been a forward thinking, leading edge film festival.  In the near future, we believe all ticketing platforms will utilize blockchain technology and Sitges will be one of the first in the entertainment sector,” says SEG CEO Mike Moyal.

The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia will take place from October 5-14, 2018 in Sitges, Catalonia, Spain.
