Sitges supports genre film projects at the Ventana Sur and Macau IFFA festivals
The Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia brand and productions were present at the recently concluded Ventana Sur Festival (Buenos Aires) and the International Film Festival & Awards (Macau). At both festivals, Sitges presented projects and productions and participated in the respective professional forums.
At Ventana Sur, the Sitges Festival promoted the presentation of the Mexican project Evasión (winner of the past Sitges Pitchbox 2019), as part of the agreement with the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts of Argentina (INCAA) - Blood Window. At the same time, the Festival evaluated fifteen Latin American projects, and selected the feature film Lo inevitable, directed by Fercks Casttellani and produced by Pablo Pinto. This apocalyptic-style story questions the faith of a family facing a presumed Judgment Day. The winner will present the production at the next Sitges Festival 2020.
At the same time, the Sitges Festival awarded the Le Film Français Award to the film Historia de lo oculto, directed by Cristian Ponce. Sitges will present this film at the Blood Window sessions during the next Cannes festival. In addition, Historia de lo oculto will be programmed at Sitges 2020.
In Buenos Aires, the Director General of the Sitges Festival’s Organizing Foundation, Mònica Garcia Massagué, along with programmer Diego López, also participated in the Meetings with the fantastic film festivals organized by the Argentinean platform.
In Macau, Sitges was actively attending with the presentation of a project at the IFFAM Project Market and participating in the Asian Festival's Industry Hub. Both festivals signed a collaboration agreement, providing for Sitges to choose a European genre project to participate in the IFFAM Project Market.
The project endorsed by Sitges this year was Welcome, directed by Geoffrey Cowper and written by Caye Casas, which picked up a Special Mention at the Sitges Pitchbox 2019. Welcome is a story that explores human limits when it comes to making money, playing with the codes of most psychological horror. The project was presented at this forum, with the intention of opening doors to its co-production and co-financing.
The person in charge of the Sitges Festival's Industry Area, Alba Tomillero, participated in the IFFAM Industry Hub meetings, in order to bring the two markets closer together and discover new talent. Among the selection of projects from this forum were Nocebo, by director Lorcan Finnega - who was invited to Sitges 2019 with the film Vivarium -, or the Chilean Blue Mountain, selected at market by Blood Window.
